Who is hungry today here in Los Angeles and in America?
The people in need of emergency food are unemployed, under-employed, mentally or physical disabled, recovering alcohol and drug abusers and people who are HIV positive and homeless. They range in age from infants to senior citizens of all ethnic, races and religions.
The three growing segments of the hungry arena are families with children, seniors and children.
Many of these families are working 1 – 2 – 3 jobs to make ends meet in this current economy.
One out of four who eats our food is a child here in LA, while nationally the number is one out of eight. There are 3,000 teens on the street in Hollywood; many of them are “throw away” kids when the mother’s new boyfriend gives her the choice: it’s them or me. Some are as young as eight years old.
Seniors now are forced to make a decision to either refill their medical prescription OR go to the grocery store for food! All in the land of plenty.
Hunger in the middle of prosperity. Downtown Los Angeles is bordered by the 110, 101 and the 10 highways. Thirty blocks square, amongst the impressive skyscrapers standing tall prosperous in the city and the nation where there is need. Within the shadows of the towers, 106 soup kitchens, food pantries and shelters are feeding the hungry. Four of these programs are feeding 1,000 people a day! All of these programs are nonprofits, none are government agencies. There is also hunger in Beverly Hills, too, with a growing number of seniors in need.
If you lost your job today, how long could you last? We all have a date.
