Raymond N. Castanos, the Spirit of ANGEL HARVEST died on March 20, 2005. Our “On the Street Representative and Driver” since 1996 Raymond traveled the highways and byways of Los Angeles meeting the people who generously shared their bounty. A few minutes later, delivering to others who were kindly feeding the hungry men, women, and children, several blocks away, yet almost a world apart; all part of our community.
Raymond remembered each of the agencies’ food preferences and particular needs. Leona at Bethany really appreciated the crisp new vegetables, giving him a giant hug afterwards. In Santa Monica, the Bread and Roses Cafe might need some extra fresh fruit. Teenage runaways, a soft spot in his heart had a special liking for lasagna and chocolate éclairs, so he’d save it for those shelters on this side of the hills.
He single-handedly managed the large catered events like the Grammys when we always needed extra packers and loaders, Raymond recruited. He went out back into his neighborhood to enlist young men as he led by example. Always patiently teaching his guys. Common sense is not that common he said with a smile, as he showed them how to be smart. Lifting, loading and carrying properly with your body, without hurting yourself or others he coached them. “Problems are only solutions just waiting for the answers.”
Always on the move, Raymond took the time to listen to people. He stopped to hear them, understanding their pain while sharing their happiness too. He knew what their needs were, with or without words. In his determined off handed manner, he’d work it out how they can make it happen together.
Raymond orchestrated the huge Universal studio holiday parties pick ups on the ten acre lot while the staff and families were entertained and feed. He navigated the Oscars parties collecting the food in spite of the heavy duty security details. Charging into and out of the Grammy parties with music in his head and food in his arms. At the Cart FedEx Grand Prix races Raymond talked performance with the race car drivers, then letting Paul Newman know how his food will feed the hungry at the downtown shelters later that night.
While overseeing our entire ANGEL HARVEST operations here in Los Angeles, Raymond trained others. He instructed the new crews at ALOHA HARVEST in Honolulu as they prepared to unload the food from U.S. Navy submarines. Whether getting on a plane or a truck, he had it planned; always making it happen, no matter what. His passport was ready for Sydney, Australia to train the OzHarvest team down under.
Family was important as he incorporated his own relatives into our growing ANGEL HARVEST team. When extra drivers were needed, his brother Richard signed on. Then brothers Tomas and Carlos drove during the Democratic National Convention’s hundred parties in a week. His sister Margaret managed the overflow of paperwork. His parents joined ANGEL HARVEST Birthday Party. His daughter Lennie and his son Ray Jr. jumped in handling either the food or the papers with a father’s satisfaction. Erin and their bundle of love Hayley wholeheartedly supported his mission. His mother and father beamed with pride as Raymond and each of their children brought their heritage, legacy and talents into mainstream America, quietly helping people.
Serving as a Board Member since 2000 Raymond contributed his wisdom, systems and knowledge enabling ANGEL HARVEST to navigate the bumpy roads on the front lines of hunger. There was always a positive solution to any problem in his book. Raymond fine-tuned a system for the City of Angels while delivering seven million meals to those in need. ANGEL HARVEST drives with Raymond as our guide. He is missed and will be eternally appreciated by all who were touched by his smile, kindness, and determination. ANGEL HARVEST was his passion 24/7.
